If you are a UK student, lecturer, or indeed, simply watch the news from time to time, you will have heard of the lecturers’ strikes that have been going on for a couple of years. With no pay raise in the last few years and increases in the cost of living and pensions, UK teachers and lecturers alike are bringing home less money than they were before. It’s no surprise, really, that they decided to take actions. What surprises me however, is that the only thing we hear about are these strikes; nothing about negotiations or proposed alternatives. For the last few years, French telecoms Orange has seen a pretty horrific thing happening to its workforce. Recent reports from the company show a high number of suicide related to work issues. Since the beginning of the year, 10 employees from different offices around the country took their own lives. Sadly, this is not the first time this happened to the company who also lost 35 employees between 2008-2009. (more…)

I can still remember the first novel I had to read for school: Lettres D’Amour de 0 à 10 (Secret Letters From 0 To 10) by Susie Morgenstern. I was 11 years old at the time, and, aside from silly little things for primary school, I had never cracked the cover of an actual book before. For the life of me, I simply cannot fully remember what the book was about. But the fact that I remember it is a shock to me. Why? Because it took me about five more years to actually get interested in reading and not consider every single book assignment from junior high as a chore. Yes, I said it ‘chore’. And boy, did things change.
